Doug Warner should stick with traffic…

Last week marked the one year anniversary of the Oklahoma City Thunder leaving Seattle.  To mark the occasion, KONG of Seattle thought it would be fun to interview someone from Channel 9 regarding the teams recent “struggles.”  Who did Channel 9 choose to represent our city???  The morning traffic reporter.

Here’s a little advice for Channel 9.  The next time a mean news lady from Seattle hits you all up for an interview regarding the Oklahoma City Thunder, pick somebody other than Doug Warner.  We don’t care if you choose a loopy Dean Blevins on pain pills, just make sure Doug is not in the building.

I’ve watched this video three times and I still don’t know what Doug was trying to say.  He mentioned a few random facts, but for the most part, he looked about as calm and collected as a Chesapeake employee getting called to the HR office on a Friday afternoon.  Seriously, in the first 30 seconds of the clip, the mean lady mentions the Thunder’s phantom “struggles” about three different times.  The only thing Doug could come up with in response was a pre-rehearsed “I’m 1,000 miles away, so your tomatoes won’t hit us!” comment.  Hardy-f*cking-har.

Anyway, maybe the next time a Seattle news outlet asks Channel 9 for an interview, they’ll choose a more qualified individual.  Maybe someone who not only knows what they are talking about, but someone who can charismatically be an ambassador for our city.  Maybe someone who can not only state that the Thunder haven’t struggled, but someone who also isn’t afraid to stand up to some bitchy anchor from Seattle.

And maybe that someone will know a little bit about cumulonimbus clouds and the jet stream.  I wonder who that someone would be”¦

  1. That looks like it could have been a great opportunity to promote OKC…maybe he did in the end. I stopped watching about halfway through. Sorry News9, this one could have been handled better.

  2. Let us cut Doug a bit of slack. After all, it was a morning show interview, and they have to go with who is going to be available up there at Channel Nine Elementary at the crack of dawn.

Quick pop quiz. You’re the local producer who is called about this spot, and basically all your told is “we need someone to talk for four minutes about the Thunder, live, with KONG in Seattle.” So you look around and think “who will be in the studio?” Here’s the answer:

    Robin Marsh
    Ed Murray
    Jed Castles
    Doug Warner

The choice of Doug was pretty easy. But, you know, if I were making the decision, I would have told Jennifer Pierce that she was anchoring that day and then kicked it to her. But I don’t produce the News at Nine (anymore . . .)

  3. This is ridiculous. First, Doug is not a traffic reporter. Second, he did an excellent job. He kept his calm and cool and made the other reporter look idiotic. He cooly conveyed the fact that OKC is not struggling. If he would have gotten more animated he would have come off as the kid being bullied into a corner.

  4. [...] The Lost Ogle has a funny Thunder-related video: “Last week marked the one year anniversary of the Oklahoma City Thunder leaving Seattle. To mark the occasion, KONG of Seattle thought it would be fun to interview someone from Channel 9 regarding the teams recent “struggles.” Who did Channel 9 choose to represent our city??? The morning traffic reporter.” [...]

  5. I dunno, I think he made Ms Negativity look like a mean spirited fool. I would have had trouble not laughing as I pointed out who lost “their”
NBA team. She seemed whiny and desperate to me and I think she expected the interview to go another way entirely. And out of the four folks Eliot listed, Doug was surely the one!

  6. I think he did really good. He didn’t bite the hook and stated facts…..

By the explanation I expected drooling and fecal matter being thrown.

  7. Ehhh, I am all for snarky comments Patrick, but actually I think this guy did pretty good. Especially the part where he sticks her with the “Actually the team did a bit better than their last season in Seattle….” hehehe
    JMO

  8. Your way off the mark on this Patty. Don’t know if you inhaled too many roman candle fumes this weekend or your negativity towards anything reported skewed your senses but based on other comments I read we are all pretty much in agreement. Doug did an outstanding job. Don’t know Doug from Adam but based on your comments I was expecting the typical toothless-okie-with-cigarrette-butt-hanging-out-of-their-mouth-explaining-that-this-never-happens-in-out-neighborhood scenario. Doug didn’t beat you out of your swingman position in 4th grade did he?

  9. “OUR team”…”Emerald City”…”spin”…? This lady anchor was doing plenty of spinning on her own! Frankly, I think Ed Murray would have been a better choice for the interview since Ed used to be a sports guy. Regardless, I think Doug should have pointed out that the Thunder are much better off in OKC than they would have been in Seattle, given the current economic problems nationwide. He should also have mentioned that it’s not just local spin, but the opinion of several national publications. Then he should have asked that female anchor if it’s true that people feel like killing themselves once they’ve been exposed to Seattle’s climate for any period of time. Sheesh….

  10. By the explanation I expected drooling and fecal matter being thrown.

Ditto. But he did okay, for a traffic reporter.

Actually, it reminded more of Ron Burgundy and Veronica Corningstone smiling at each other while offering blasts and insults during the credits.

How’s your struggling, struggling, struggling team?
olololol… you tomato hurlers you… yuck yuck
Oh your perspective in Oklahoma is just totally stupi… er, different
Actually, as bad as we were here, we were worse there… so there!
    Well isn’t your angle special?
    Yeah well… F you lady.

  11. Well, I guess Doug is a former traffic reporter. But oh well, you know what they say: once a traffic reporter, always a traffic reporter.

  12. And I still stand by what we wrote. Doug did a terrible job in the interview. His answers, especially the first one, were long winded, confusing, and really made no sense.

“Frankly, I think Ed Murray would have been a better choice for the interview since Ed used to be a sports guy.”

True, Ed used to be a sports guy, but Ed would have been put in the unusual position of having to answer questions. Ed, as we all know, only answers his own questions.

  14. I’m going to agree with Patrick. Compared to her, maybe Doug sounded okay, but by a normal standard, he was bad. With so much material to throw back at her, the first thing he mentions is the sales tax shortfall not being as big a deal as they in Seattle (although she didn’t bring it up specifically–so in essence, he handed her material) made it out to be?

I spent last week in Seattle and got to see Key Arena…I can see exactly why the team wanted out. It was beautiful on the outside, but it was tiny. Before seeing it, I knew that it didn’t hold nearly as many fans, but due to the size of the building, there couldn’t have been ameneties to help bring in revenues. The team is much better off here.

  15. Doug seemed a little nervous but he didn’t do too bad. But as it was pointed out he was probably the best choice. Can you imagine Robin Marsh on our end of that interview? She would have started talking about her son and she would have used the phrase “bad mama jama” at least twice.

  16. He did a fine job snark mavens. Made her come off as a petty bitch. Blevins would have been embarrassingly righteous and smug, on downers or not, pointing out how Seattle is full of junkies, and Oklahomans are God’s chosen people, especially in Edmond- you seen their school buses, sweet rides. They even got ac.

  17. Her reporting is a lot like those Russian Reporters in Airplane 2:

“4 alarm fire in downtown Moscow today made way for a glorious tractor factory!”
