Breaking News: Bob Stoops played football at Purdue
If you’re like me, you always assumed that Bob Stoops played college football at the University of Iowa (just look at the tiny picture above). However”“in what has to be breaking news”“it appears that The Oklahoman has learned that Bob Stoops actually played for Purdue!
From an article regarding the anticipated hiring of Jay Norvell as the Sooners replacement for Kevin Sumlin:
Oklahoma is expected to name Jay Norvell as wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator sometime this week, sources have confirmed.
Norvell, who was offensive coordinator at UCLA this past season, told the Lincoln (Neb.) Journal-Star on Wednesday that he has accepted the OU position…
Sooner coach Bob Stoops and Norvell have a connection that dates back to when they played together at Purdue in the early 1980s.
What’s bizarre is that both Stoops and Norvell both claim on their resumes that they played college football at Iowa, but who are you going to trust? Greedy, seedy college football coaches? Or Oklahoma’s trusted news leader, The Oklahoman?
My money is with The Oklahoman.
However, I will admit that there is a slight possibility that the people in the dark tower simply made an ignorant, ridiculous and embarrassing error. But, seriously, how could that happen when they employ and pay professional journalists, proofreaders, copy editors, assistant editors and, well, normal editors.
It’s impossible right?
Not really. One thing I’ve learned over the past six months”“whether it’s Cale Gundy’s infamous rant towards Jenni Carlson or the way the Putnam City School District has handled the crazy situation regarding their district superintendent”“is that people and institutions do make mistakes. Only some mistakes are a lot more embarrassing, and completly idiotic, than others.

Is Miss America Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?
I don’t watch the show “Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?” because, well, I’m a little afraid of what the answer might be. Also, I’m too busy doing nothing else, which seems more exciting. But I might tune in tomorrow night, because Oklahoma’s own Miss America, Lauren Nelson, is going to be a contestant.
Now, beauty queens, much like myself, sometimes have a reputation as not being very intelligent. I for one think that is a terrible stereotype, and am fully confident that, armed with a strong Lawton Mac education and the benefits of dumbed-down questions that come with celebrity game shows, Ms. Nelson will prove to indeed be smarter than a fifth grader.
Also, I’m not certain, but I assume she picked this particular game show for a reason, and that reason is not Jeff Foxworthy. She’s been all over my television for weeks talking about saving the children from internet predators. A noble goal, to be sure, but one that we would have been able to take a little more seriously had she not flipped, and then flopped when it came time to testify against said predators. It’s all just a little too, I don’t know, Bobbi Burbridge Lane for my taste.
Oh well, tune in tomorrow and watch un-funny exchanges like this one and find out the answer to a question man has asked since the beginning of time: “Is Miss America smarter than a fifth grader?” And do they always have to wear their crown?

Blazers Hockey Is Spigtacular

If you’re like me, you haven’t been to a Blazers game since the good old days when Steve Simoni and George Dupont were in town. But the Blazers’ marketing department has come up with a foolproof plan to get fans to come out to Friday night’s game. It’s FFA night! By itself, nothing too out of the ordinary, but this particular game features a giveaway that is quite simply too awesome for words.
…all FFA members attending the game will have an opportunity to win one of four animals to be given away at the end of the evening’s game: an Express Ranch heifer, valued at $2,500, a lamb, a goat and a pig.
Go to a hockey game… win a cow. Just like God intended it.

If a radio station changes formats and nobody is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

Maybe along with the Ford Center tax, we can pass a penny sales tax to get some real radio stations in Oklahoma City. Because just when you thought the Oklahoma City radio market couldn’t get any worse, our friends at OklahomaRock.com (who…by the way…do not respond to emails) share this “news:”
During their nothing-but-Metallica weekend, 94.7 The Buzz teased a format change with sweepers like “What’s the Buzzzzzz? Find out Monday morning at 10″³.
After sitting through Lex & Terry, they tipped their hat toward the rumors that KTOK was going to take over the 94.7 signal with a Glenn Beck soundbyte. (cringe) After taking a few swipes at the KATT, the first song we hear is AC/DC’s “Back in Black” (ugh), followed by Foo Fighters, The Ramones, Korn, Pantera, Atreyu and Tool.
So obviously, the station is switching from “˜Alternative’ to “˜Active Rock’ in order to take some market share away from the KATT. The fourth quarter of 2007 was very unkind to 94.7 FM (1.4), falling just above La Indomable 105.3 FM (1.3) in the ratings. Meanwhile, KATT (5.7) has been a consistent top five station in the ratings. So from a business sense, it’s a very smart move the KHBZ.
Despite it being the ‘number one’ present on my car radio, I don’t think I’ve listened to 95x The Buzz since it broadcast Hornets games in 2005. In that regard, I would like to thank Oklahoma Rock for unintentionally reminding me to remove 94.7 from my line of stations that I have preset but never listen to.
Additionally, I’d like to thank the powers-at-be at the Buzz for making a completely idiotic decision and (instead of bringing Indie Rock back to Oklahoma City radio) deciding to compete with one of Oklahoma City’s (like it or not) few radio institutions, The KATT. And the reason I’d like to thank them is because I like to see incompetent people get fired, and hopefully these buffoons will get fired pretty soon.
Seriously, imagine how great it would be if instead of throwing out AC/DC, Korn and Atreyu, we were greeted by even mainstream indie rock like The Flaming Lips, The Arcade Fire, Band of Horses, or dear god, even Interpol. Imagine the “Buzz” (eh) that would have created. But no, we get to hear”“as an OklahomaRock commenter perfectly labeled it”“more MethRock.
And to go with it, I bet we’ll eventually get Blade Runner, too. Thank god for illegal downloading.

In the future, we may start posting fun polls and stuff. Before we get really into it, we figured we should have some test polls. Here is the first one:

Obligatory License Plate Post
If you are anything like those of us at The Lost Ogle, you are obsessed with license plates. In fact, before we got the idea for an OKC-centric site, the three of us were going to have a blog dedicated only to license plates. But, we decided it would generate too much traffic for us to handle, so we just decided to spend our free time posting funny pictures of Tyler Suitors.
But yeah, we love license plates. Specifically, vanity plates. We each recently got our own vanity plates. Here they are:
Tony’s:
LUVS2BLOG
Patrick’s:
BEERGOOD
Clark’s:
HRD2DCIDWHOIZWRSENHOFORCOBRNBOTHRTERIBLOBVSGOOSU
But even better than simple vanity plates are specialty license plates. You know, like the Support Education plates or the NRA plates. Now, our good pals over at Red Dirt Kings have brought our attention to the greatest specialty plate of all time: The “Killed In Action” License Plate.

Have you recently been Killed In Action and don’t have a way to show it on your license plate? Then this is the plate for you. Thanks, Oklahoma Tax Commission!
