Bill Nye is coming to OSU on Thursday…

Bill-Nye Oklahoma state

Here's some exciting news for people who either love bow ties and / or believe in the principles and foundations of modern science. Bill Nye "The Science the Guy" is speaking at OSU on Thursday.

From an incredibly out-of-touch with current events news story on News9.com:

Bill Nye will visit Oklahoma State University as a keynote speaker this Thursday.

The pop culture science icon will speak at 7 p.m. on February 20 at the Gallagher-Iba Arena.

According to OSU Communications, Nye's speech will focus on "encouraging his audience to change the world." The event will include a keynote address followed by an audience question and answer session.

Tickets are available to the public for $10, and they go on sale at 4 p.m. February 20 at the Gallagher-Iba Arena ticket booth. OSU students, faculty and staff members may attend the event for free with a valid OSU ID. Doors open at 6 p.m.

OSU students have a chance to win two tickets to dine with Nye and the OSU Speaker's Board. To enter, students should tweet a Vine video portraying them demonstrating science to @OSUspeakers.

Allied Arts and Special Events Manager Brandon Mitts said the board chose Nye because he is a pop culture icon who has a strong appeal with various age groups and a strong message.

"People love Bill Nye because he's approachable and they've seen his TV show, but I think they're going to be surprised with the passion he has about science and its impact on the future," Mitts said. "He'll talk a lot about why science is important and the ways we can get behind it."

Nye is famous for his show, "Bill Nye, The Science Guy," which ran from 1993 to 1998.

Yep, that's it. Pop culture icon Bill Nye is visiting Stillwater. Nothing else to see here. Move along. He's not one of the most vocal and prominent figures defending humanity against the Christian right's war on science. He didn't recently have a much publicized debate with some amusement park operator who thinks man walked with dinosaurs. You must be thinking of that Beakman fellow. Good bye.

Seriously, that's just weird. Way to avoid the Elephas maximus in the room. This pro-science advocate is venturing into the bible belt to talk... science! Either the people at News 9 are incredibly naive or they're trying to avoid controversy. Since this graphic of Kelly Ogle about to be violated by a man with a gun is currently the cover photo on their Facebook page, I'm going to vote naive.

Of course, Bill Nye's outspoken views on science (He believes in both evolution and global warming. As Jenni Carlson would say, "Wowzers!") wasn't lost on some of News 9's Facebook followers. They put down their Reader's Digest to set the story straight about this hedonistic pop culture icon:

In all fairness, there were also comments like these:

I'm not sure I like this disturbing trend of people balancing out Derplahoman comments with nuggets of logic and reason. It's starting to make my job more difficult.

Anyway, the Bill Nye event is this Thursday night. If you go, have fun and learn about science and / or other things that will send you to Hell.
