Star Wars vs. Star Trek nerd fight breaks out near Plaza District…

1:19 PM EDT on July 7, 2017

Star Wars or Star Trek? It's one of the great debates in human history.

In one corner you have the greatest fantasy epic of our time, an intergalactic space opera set a long time ago in a galaxy far far away pitting the heroic underdog forces of good against the dark side of evil. In the other corner you have a sci-fi juggernaut of the silver and small screen exploring strange new worlds, seeking out new life and new civilizations, and boldly going where no sci-fi series had gone before.

Nerds have been arguing for years in chat rooms, message boards and cosplay conventions about which series is best, and in an obvious sign of today's trying times, those debates are now turning violent.

Check out this funny but not funny story via KOKH. I guess a friendly debate about the merits of Star Wars and Star Trek escalated into a brawl...

Police say a fight over Star Trek and Star Wars led to an assault in the metro.

Jerome Dewayne Whyte, 23, was arrested July 1 on a complaint of assault and battery, possession of marijuana and outstanding Oklahoma County warrants.

Oklahoma City Police Department reports show that Whyte and another man were in the living room of an apartment in the 1400 block of NW 16 Street when they began arguing if Star Wars or Star Trek was better. The victim told police he became frustrated and stated "You're just a trick" before walking back to his room.

I've been in plenty of Star Wars vs Star Trek debates in my life, and trust me on this, there's nothing more annoying or frustrating than some arrogant Treky (Editor's note: Louis alerted me via text that it's Trekkie or Trekker) who refuses to admit that Star Wars is the far superior franchise. It's like arguing with a Trump supporter about global warming. They ignore facts and truths and live in their own bizarro reality. You can't talk any sense into them.

That's not a knock on Star Trek or anything. It's great in its own right, but Star Wars is just cooler and more fun, especially if you forget about the prequels. Star Wars has the Millennium Falcon, the Force, Wookies, Jedis, Princess Leia's gold bikini, and the greatest movie villain of the 20th century. No offense to Dilithium Crystals, Spock, photon torpedoes, the holodeck or Geordi La Forge's VISOR, but Star Trek isn't in the same class.

Moving on...

Whyte allegedly followed the man and shoved him to the ground. The victim got back up and told police he stated "You wanna replay that?" and was once again shoved to the ground.

Police say Whyte then wrapped his arm around the victim's neck and began choking him. The victim was near unconsciousness when he pulled out a pocket knife. Whyte let go and reached for the knife, cutting himself. He then left the room.

Police later arrested Whyte and booked him into the Oklahoma County Jail.

Wow. That's disappointing. Choke holds and pockets knives? Where's the Vulcan death grip and lightsabers?! These nerds need to step up their game if they're going to fight about this stuff. I'd suggest the people at SoonerCon reach out and invite them duke it out in the Octagon after the Magic: The Gathering tournament. What nerfherder wouldn't want to watch that?
