Friday Night in the Big Town: WestFest, Yoga and Guyutes

The kids are back in school! Of course this means all over the metro moms are donning those yoga pants and heading to Whole Foods to shop in peace and quiet. Or, to sit on the couch and catch up on three months-worth of tv shows in your pajamas. Whatever your pleasure, it is that blissful time of year when children have a set schedule and all’s right with the world. Never mind that the kids are attending sub-par schools in a broke-ass state, at least they’re out of the house right? Since this is the first weekend of the school year, here are a few things you might want to check out, with or without the kids.

WestFest
NW 41st-43rd Streets
FREE
Saturday, August 20th
Noon-10pm

WestFest is a free, family friendly event along Western Ave. in OKC. There will be food trucks, because, every event in the metro offers this unique form of culinary fare now, music, beer and shopping. This is designed to get people from other parts of OKC to converge on a few blocks and see how other folks live, where they eat, where they shop, you get the idea. There will be two outdoor stages featuring musical acts throughout the day and culminating in Vonna Pearl at 8:30 on the Will Rogers Stage and Beau Jennings & The Tigers at 9pm on the Main Stage. On the WestFest website, there is a Spotify playlist so you can get a sneak peek of the music that the quiet residents of Crown Heights and Edgemere Park will be hearing all day long.

Guyutes 2nd Anniversary Party
73 NW 23rd
Thursday-Saturday
4pm-1:30 am (21 to enter after 10)

Calling all cougars, college students and hipsters! Guyutes will be celebrating its two-year anniversary with a three-day party filled with live music, a drunken spelling bee, a raffle and prizes. Katie Wicks will be performing Saturday night to close out the event and they didn’t skimp on the raffle prizes – 50” TVs for $1 raffle tickets (no limit to the number of tickets one can purchase either). So, get your drink on and try not to drop your new TV onto 23rd street.

Sunset Totally 80’s Rooftop Yoga Party
The Root
3012 N. Walker Ave., Ste. B
Friday, August 18th
8:30 pm-11:30 pm
$20 includes 1 hour rooftop all-levels yoga class and 1 craft beer (or wine or kombucha)

Girls, we wanna have fun! Seriously grab your best Jane Fonda leotards and get to the rooftop for some bitchin’ yoga. Start off at The Root in Paseo, the best way to do yoga is after a cocktail or two am I right? However, considering the yoga class is on a rooftop, it might be in my best interest to wait to imbibe until after class. Live music begins at 7:30, then up to the roof by 9 to bend and pose to the 80’s. BYOM (mat) and in case you were wondering as I was, a kombucha is a fermented tea drink, that if made incorrectly could kill you, doesn’t that sound like fun? I’ll stick with the cocktails, thanks.
