Thanksgiving Weekend Radar

By Friday evening, you’ll be ready to push away the plate of Thanksgiving leftovers and change out of your sweatpants. But you may still feel a little lethargic from all that overindulgence—especially if you managed to get your mouth around one of the turkeys recalled by the USDA for Salmonella poisoning.

With your laziness and mine in mind, I’ve rounded up some perfect, low-key happenings in Oklahoma City to get you out of the house and into the holiday spirit this weekend.

Murder Mystery Dinner Theater
Saturday, November 24th  | 6 p.m.
Skirvin Hotel, Oklahoma City

True crime and theatre junkies, take note! What is better than a swanky four-course dinner at the Skirvin? A swanky four-course murder mystery dinner at the Skirvin. This large Dinner Detective party has been infiltrated by undercover actors who play sneaky roles and drop hints that are critical to solving the pretend murder. Attendees gather clues and form their own theories about the perpetrator of the crime. Can you be the sleuth who dines and drinks and cracks the case? For anyone with post-Thanksgiving anger-management issues related to their relatives, I can say, with confidence: this production is a productive and creative alternative to actual murder.

Lyric Theatre’s A Christmas Carol 2018
Friday, Saturday & Sunday, November 23rd – 25th
Lyric’s Plaza Theatre, Oklahoma City

It’s good to have traditions that are passed down through generations. But it’s even better to create your own. Thanksgiving weekend marks the opening of Lyric’s A Christmas Carol production, which takes you on a magical journey with Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. It could become your one holiday tradition that doesn’t involve consumerism, politics or overindulgence! This Charles Dickens classic features stunning sets, sparkling costumes and a cast of beloved characters that will put your tribe in a holiday state of mind. Tickets are available for 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. shows over the weekend.

Holiday Pop-Up Shops in Midtown
Friday, Saturday & Sunday, November 23rd – 25th
399 NW 10th St., Oklahoma City

Friday marks the kickoff of an Oklahoma City favorite: the Holiday Pop-Up Shops in Midtown. This rotating lineup of local vendors with thoughtful, unique pop-up shops is as visually stunning as it is fun. You could even consider it productive, if you have a gift list for people who are especially difficult to shop for. When I go, I like to find unique, handmade treasures and dance around in delirium over the smell of the freshly cut pine trees my kids wish we could manage to decorate without skulls.

It’s not mindless consumerism, when you select thoughtful gifts for people you love (or maybe just like a lot), while supporting local small businesses. Want to make it a date? Grab dinner and drinks at Fassler Hall, then walk across the street to the Holiday Pop-Up Shops, snuggle up over a warm cup of the hot chocolate and drop some well-placed holiday gift hints.
