Your most trusted-trusted source for all-things Oklahoma City is back with its weekly feature, TLO Weekend Radar, highlighting a few of the most promising happenings in the metro.
This weekend, we are particularly excited for some big balls, a Chinese New Year celebration and a white hot mess with vocal chords.
The Harlem Globetrotters
Chesapeake Energy Arena
Feb. 9 | 2 p.m. & 7 p.m.
We are a basketball-loving folk here in the 405. We support two colleges, two professional teams, and we flock to the iconic trick-shot masters of the Harlem Globetrotters, like we have not all been to their games a thousand times before. Well, it is that time of year, kiddies. Gather up your small humans, tuck that stealth liquor under your shirt, and go watch nameless, retired basketball pros still outperform your best day on the court. Ever wanted to experience the humiliation of having a forty-something former NBA B-teamer dunk Jordan-style, while leaping over your full standing height? Volunteer to be a part of the show and really revel in the shame. And then return home with a fresh, new, can-do spirit about the New Year’s resolution to get yoked that you abandoned about two weeks ago.
An Affair of the Heart presented by Braum’s: A weekend-long event of wandering through stalls of lovingly crafted items muttering, “I could make that for cheaper…” Feb. 8-10 | All Day
Lunar New Year Celebration
Myriad Botanical Gardens
Feb. 8 | 6 – 9 p.m.
The Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations kicked off on Tuesday this week. This means all of your Wish app orders are going to take even longer to get here, as the whole of the country of China is essentially shut down for the holiday. You can join in on the celebration welcoming The Year of the Pig this weekend as well. The partnership event is hosted by The OKC Myriad Botanical Gardens and Super Cao Nguyen, everyone’s favorite store to wander through going, “What the fuck is that? Are you supposed to eat it like that?” Walk the line of cultural appreciation and appropriation with lion dancers, face painting and Chinese calligraphers promising they are writing your name and not something about barbecue fish. Maybe don’t get it tattooed though, Ariana.
The OKC Blue vs South Bay Lakers: That other team everyone forgets we have. Feb. 10 | 3 p.m.
89th Street OKC
Feb. 8 | 7 p.m.
Friday night in the big town should always kick off with a struggling pop star in an “intimate” OKC music venue. Aaron Carter, the little (and littler known) brother of 90s pop icon, Nick Carter, is coming to 89th Street OKC tonight. Tickets are bargain basement priced at the all-ages venue. Be sure to bring your change to grab some chips from the vending machine and a questionable beer from the “bar.” Then enjoy an interesting mix of pop, hip-hop and shade toward Justin Bieber, as the once-famous child star claws his way to a comeback in real time.
BANDA MS: CON TODAS LAS FUERZAS TOUR: A Latin music experience, for when you want to both look and feel really white. Feb. 8 | 8:30 p.m.
Have something that should be on our radar? Let us know.
