Every driver has been in this situation – you’re late for something and, as you speed down the road, your car is trapped behind a slow-moving school bus about to park. The red lights flash and all plant their feet on the brakes. Though frustration, you understand why you must stop.
Yet the concept of understanding does not apply to most dickhead drivers. That is why the Oklahoma Legislature is taking action in the form of surveillance.
Via News 9:
A bill aimed at reducing accidents near stopped school buses is on its way to the governor’s desk.
House Bill 1926 would outfit school buses with cameras, and when cars blow past stopped school buses, new video evidence could lead to a ticket.
“Any day of the week that school is in session, an average of 1,600 people will go through red school bus lights in the state of Oklahoma on any given school day. That’s 83,000 nationwide,” said Rep. Dell Kerbs, R-Shawnee.
I’ve been told in the past that I’m too young to be this cynical about Oklahoma and its politics. To this I reply, “I’m a 24-year-old college student who’s lived in this state my entire life. Try me.” However, I was proud to see this bill be sent to the governor’s desk.
There is no shortage of idiots on the roads these days. It’s high time that someone took actions towards these special types of morons.
Cameras would be set up to capture motorists passing stopped school buses, shooting video of the car, license plate and driver.
That citation could lead to a $100 fine. Seventy-five percent of the money raised from those fines would go towards putting more cameras on more school buses.
If the governor approves it, House Bill 1926 will go into effect in November.
I mean, that’s a fine start; but endangering other drivers and children entering or exiting a school bus is only worth a $100 citation? According to okc.gov, speeding in a school zone is worth the maximum of $213. Legislators could have at least gone to that extent. Or, even better, just take the driver’s car away and make them ride a geriatric donkey for a week to show them that they aren’t the only jackass in town.
I speak as someone who was almost hit by a car as a child while exiting a school bus. The bus lights continued to flash. As I turned the back corner of the bus, a man in a red convertible mustang raced down the street and had to slam on his brakes. I froze.
“Watch where you’re walkin’ shit bird!” the man yelled. I was 14. He then swerved around me and drove off. The bus driver honked her horn in protest.
In other words, I give praise to the legislators who pushed the bill on through. Be tougher on these bastards.
