Local senator wants to ban transgender atheletes

Sports! They’re fun and also very dumb. Basketball is my favorite sport and I love the way they dribble up and down the court. But gender roles have kept many leagues separated for years because of the idea that men and women can’t compete together.

An Oklahoma state senator filed a bill that would prevent people who identify as different genders from competing in sports leagues that they feel like they’d belong to. From Fox25:

State Sen. Micheal Bergstrom filed Senate Bill 331, which would protect female athletes from competing against males who identify as females in school-sponsored athletic events.

Also known as the Save Women’s Sports Act, the measure expressly designates that athletic teams sponsored by a public or private school would be based on biological sex and broken into three categories: Males, including “men” or “boys”; Females, including “women” or “girls”; or Co-ed or “mixed.”

[…]

Similarly, the bill would protect schools that enforce biological sex identification on their sports teams from any adverse action taken by the State Board of Education, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, and any school athletic association or intercollegiate association in which the school is a member.

“It’s unfair to ask our female athletes to compete against biological males in any sporting event unless the team is categorized as co-ed,” Bergstrom said.

Why do these people give a fuck? If someone who identifies as a male, or non-binary for that matter, wants to play football and is talented enough, just let them. This is obviously a nasty strike against not just women, but people who are transgender.

I’ve known women who played football in high school and were bigger than most of the dudes. There’s so many WNBA players who would be stars in the NBA, or at least better than all the scrubs on the bench.

My partner is a roller derby all-star who played against men’s teams and they brutalized the guys. Many of the world’s best athletes are women, and there’s also plenty of room for people who have different identities to be involved in sports.

Maybe there’s room for men’s teams, women’s teams, and co-ed teams, but in high school, fuck it. If you wanna play football and you’re a girl or someone who identifies as such and you’re good enough, you should be allowed to try out.

With all the shit going on in the world right now, this is such a waste of legislative measure. Put me in coach, I wanna play.

  1. I saw an article recently about girls losing scholarship opportunities because they were competing against men who identified as women in sports such as track and field. Biologically, the males have an advantage in running and so they were winning all the female races. Maybe that is what is driving this?

    1. The source of your “article”?

  2. A transgender female who has gone through male puberty still retains their physical advantages. The current holder of the Olympic 100m ladies record is Florence Griffith Joyner and that was back in 1988 and there have long been rumors that she was juiced at the olympics. That time gets broken regularly by top high school male runners all the time.

An under 15 boys soccer team beat the women’s US national team and a similar team beat the women’s Australian national team.

  3. The author has this issue completely backward. Its not about women trying out for the mens team but about preventing people who have bodies developed with male hormones dominating females in womens/girls sports.

  4. I totally agree; no reason to separate them, play to each player’s individual strengths and weaknesses. Biological sex isn’t everything.

  5. I don’t think this is about girls wanting to play football.
I think it is about boys wanting to play women’s sports.

shit – just open all sports up to all people and let the best athletes prevail. I don’t think you’d see many women competing for spots on male dominated sports like football or wrestling, etc.
It’s a biological thing and has nothing to do with identity politics.
    are there exceptions? – sure.

BTW – have you WATCHED the WNBA? Honestly?

    1. This is article is the musing of an intellectual idiot.
The equation you presented was biological female participating on a biological male team(sport).
Biological male participating on a biological female team(sport) in your flawed reasoning must be the same.
Could you imagine Mike Tyson claiming to be female and boxing any biological female?

  6. Of all the problems that our State faces right now, how in the heck does this “issue” rise to the attention of a legislator – even of a nut like Bergstrom?

Just as I asked JShan above for the source of his “article” about the grave problem of trangender women taking over women’s sports, I’m asking if anyone else thinks this is really a problem.

Show me some actual examples of transgender women depriving cisgender women of athletic scholarships and I’ll listen. Until then, STFU.

I have no dog in this fight, just referencing this article.

      1. Thank you. I wanted to get an idea of the scope of the perceived problem.

  7. You totally missed the point on this one my dude. Like way off. Like to the point where I am totally confused how someone could miss the point by such a wide margin.

The bill has absolutely nothing to do with preventing girls from playing football or or anything like that. The bill is to protect girls from having to compete unfairly against males in their sports. Females and males are vastly different physiologically and that is why sports are separated by gender.

I mean there are reasons the fastest woman of all time’s world record shattering 100 meter time wouldn’t even be good enough to place in the preliminaries of a division 2 men’s track meet. The only thing “degendering” sports would do is effectively eliminate women and girls from all sports. Dems odd to want to marginalize female athletes like that. (And no, there is literally not one WNBA player that would even make a D league roster, let alone take a roster spot from a current player on an NBA team)

  8. We seem to have plenty of legislators who express concern over “issues” like this while firmly opposing the teaching of any kind of sex ed.

  9. Some of these bills, smh. Focus on our problems.

Also see Rene Richards, transgendered tennis player in the 70s.

    1. Renee transitioned in her 40s and made top 20 at WTA with women who were in their teens to early 30s. Martina Navratilova said she barely beat her and at that point Martina was at her peak physically.

Renee Richards also said that if she had transitioned at 22 and not 42 no woman would beat her and have somewhat reversed her position on trans athletes.

  10. Apparently Mr. Minding Other Peoples Business will probably lose his ever loving mind when he discovers grade school age boys and girls currently wrestle against one another RIGHT HERE IN OKIESTAN!

  11. Perhaps Bergstrom was “triggered” during holiday recess after watching an episode of “South Park” from a few seasons ago that featured a character who resembled Macho Man Randy Savage who recently announced they identified as a female and was allowed to compete against Vice Principal Strong Woman. Just a hunch….

  12. I’m fat. But I identify as skinny. I’m translender.

    1. When did you “transition?”

  13. The real question is why sports are still segregated between boys/girls or men/women? We got rid of racial segregation in sports years ago. What’s wrong with putting everyone together and may the best human win?

    1. Because most sports fans don’t want to watch something like that?

  14. I think it should be left to the league itself to make the rules
instead of either state or federal laws.

It’s not fair to female athletes who have trained their whole
lives to only discover they can’t succeed in their ambitions
because of the distinct advantage of the male physical makeup
from those who identify themselves mentally as a female.
That’s why wrestlers, boxers and others are paired according to
their weight in order to have a fair fight.

However, on a high school level it creates a different situation.
Why not let them enjoy the sport if that’s what they want to do.

The attempts to be all PC these days is so rampant that good ole
common sense can fly right out the window.

  15. Just leave gender out. The best plays regardless of sex/age. No gender based sports. I mean you should see me go all Manute Bol on my 8 year-old daughter. Get that shit out of here!

  16. We have come a long way since some states required girls to play six-on-six half-court basketball and didn’t allow them to play by “boys rules.” Oklahoma was the last state (of course) to do away with six-on-six – in 1995! Passionate arguments were made that boys’ rules would leave a girl sitting on the bench, and that all that running isn’t good for girls.

My mother played “boys rules” basketball in high school in Missouri. She loved it, and it didn’t seem to have done her any harm.
