TLO Restaurant Review: Ole Town Gyros

8:23 AM EDT on September 20, 2022

Like many classical tales, a fanciful Greek restaurant and an old bodega had a baby out of wedlock and, apparently, it was named Ole Town Gyros, 402 E Main St. in Norman. Opa!

Before I went, I did a cursory glance at the online reviews. Some of them were not very good, which lit a fire in my belly and made me want to go there even more! So, with a spring in my torturous step, I traveled down Main St. and found a nice-enough eatery, with a warm atmosphere and a few charming hostesses to boot; I was into it.

After a few of my selections were ordered, I took a seat and reflected. Sure, the groceries were dusty and the free water in the pitcher seemed stale, but this place had character and that said a whole mouthful. Even if it seemed like an interminable wait for my food, when it arrived at my table, it looked ever-so appealing, starting with the simple Sampler ($10.99).

Consisting of the four Mediterranean food groups—Falafel, Dolma, Hummus and Tzatziki—it was perfect. The deep-fried Falafel provided an audacious start, with the ground chickpeas begging for a robust audition, while the under-dressed grape leaves of the Dolma left little to the imagination. Additionally, both the Hummus and Tzatziki, always a favorite, were tops in this game.

After a few more bites—and a few more, just to be safe—my main dish was presented for all to see – the Gyro Plate ($11.99) with Fries Dinner.

Now, to be fair, the fries—and there were alot of them in my styrofoam container—were fine, but a tad soggy. I also didn’t need an Idaho county's worth...

But it was no matter, as it was the Gyro I was after!

With spiced meat and cooling tzatziki draped on warmed pita bread, it was magnificent. The meat was thick and plentiful, with various spices blanketing the whole dish. Although I needed another pita to scoop up the remaining meat, it was a wonderful meal.

Aristotle, probably, said “I want it hot! I want it fresh! And more importantly, I want it good!” I agree with him, wanting more of Ole Town Gyros and even more slabs of gyro-meat. Cómpralo ya!
