Wayne Coyne claims that Mayor Mick Cornett is a “pot smoking mayor.”

As we mentioned last week, Wayne Coyne and the Plastic Ono Band played a couple of concerts on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. During the show (video above), Wayne took a break to honor Yoko Ono with a mayoral proclamation naming December 31st, 2011 as Yoko-lahoma City Day. In the process, he decided to out Mayor Cornett as a pothead.

Here's a hastily-typed transcript of what Wayne said to the crowd:

While we were setting up today, the Mayor of Oklahoma City, who is a good friendof ours, [and] secretly in his own home smokes marijuana. He proclaimed Yoko-lahoma City today. Our manager Scott Booker is going to read the proclamation named by your very own pot smoking mayor.

Wayne Coyne is so strange that I'm not sure if he's being serious or just having a little fun at the mayor's expense. I kind of lean towards the having fun thing. Although I'm sure Mayor Cornett has smoke the herb at one time or another in his life, I can't imagine a pothead blocking a lingerie football team from coming to Oklahoma City. Then again, when we asked him to explain why he blocked the move, he basically told us there were too many reasons to list. That totally sounds like something a lazy pothead would write while watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force re-runs on the DVR.

Also, if you were a closeted pothead, wouldn't Wayne Coyne be the one person you would probably want to tell? It's Wayne F*cking Coyne! The guy owns a psychedelic art gallery that has huge marijuana leaves on the sidewalk and a vagina on the front door! Plus, I don't think Wayne even considers marijuana a drug. Wayne calling Mayor Mick a pothead would be like Clark Matthews saying the mayor likes pimento cheese sandwiches.

Anyway, I guess we'll have to wait until either Mayor Cornett releases his memoir, is arrested, or grows some dreads and starts driving around a beat-up VW camper van with a working kitchen sink before we'll know the truth. In the meantime, here's a video of the Flaming Lips covering Strawberry Fields Forever along with the original Beatles music video for the song. They are both great songs to get stoned to.
