Uhm, you can meet Hinder at a liquor store today…

When we started this site nearly six years ago, Hinder punchlines were a regular and consistent feature. They were just too easy. We couldn’t resist making fun of those popular meth rockers and Creed wannabes from Oklahoma City. They even cracked the top 10 of our Top 100 Oklahoma Embarrassments. Here’s what we wrote:

We know everyone has their own unique taste in music. For the most part, we respect that. But if you’re over the age of 21 and enjoy the “music” of Hinder, you need to see a therapist. And be sure to take your Axe Body Spray and Aeropostale shirt with you, too.

We were not the only people criticizing the act. In 2008, Joe Wertz profiled the band in an Oklahoma Gazette cover story titled “Hating Hinder.” The article examined why non-meth users hate the band. The story didn’t set well with the group. I guess it hurts to be dissed by your hometown alternative weekly. The article even led drummer Cody “Blower” Ross to confront Joe at the Gazette headquarters. That’s almost as brave as bullying an employee at Len’s Crafters.

(Quick Aside: The Gazette criticized Hinder for performing shitty music and basically being a “rock n’ roll” parody act. Look at OKC treated them like they were rock gods. Everything you need to know about our city’s  two alternative weeklies can be summarized by those facts.)

Since their peak on 2008, Hinder’s popularity — and our lame jokes about them — have been on the decline. If you need proof, check out their tour page. They’ve gone from playing large arenas and festivals in cities across the globe to headlining county fairs and tribal casinos in Buffalo. Or just consider that band members are making some promotional appearances today at Oklahoma City liquor stores.

From the Hinder Facebook Page:

We’re going to be hanging out at liquor stores all day tomorrow signing booze and records. Come hang out and get some CLEAR10 Vodka and Dizzy 3.

2pm-3pm – Cheers Wine & Spirits – 1007 SW 19th St, Moore, OK  73160

3:30pm-4:30pm- Quicker Liquor – 9109 S May Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73159 (SW
OKC)

5:15pm-6:15pm - Broadway Wine Merchants - 824 N Broadway Ave, Oklahoma City,
OK 73102 (DOWNTOWN)

7pm-8pm - The Wild Turkey Finer Wines & Spirits - 12021 N MacArthur Blvd, Oklahoma
City, OK 73162 (NW OKC)

I wish I would have known about this sooner. I would have organized an Ultimate Hinder Fan Photo Contest. It would have been like our State Fair Photo Contest, only more depressing and with a soundtrack.

In all seriousness, send us a pic of the band if you go to one of these things. Spencer and I have a bet as to how many visible sores “Blower” has on his face. I also want to know what the turn out is for these types of events. If it works for Hinder, maybe we’ll start making promotional appearances at liquor stores, strip clubs and comic book shops. That would be fun.

  1. SofaKings says:

they synced well with the recorded tracks at KATT-fest way better than they used to

  2. They’re also gonna be serving drinks at Republic tonight. Certainly a low moment for Republic, but good practice for the band’s future careers…

  3. Joe Wertz says:

Ha! I still remember the receptionist buzzing me: “Joe? Um… The drummer from Hinder is here. He wants to see you. What should I do?”

  4. Joe Murray says:

I can read this over and over! I’ve been ashamed of these guys since the 1st time I heard “get stoned.” I remember listening thinking “Jesus , what a terrible song and what pathetic lyrics. Sounds like some kid in high school scribbled down the words while day dreaming in detention.” My disgust grew greater when I read their article in Rolling Stone (must of been abSOlutley nothing going on in the national music scene at the time for David Fricke and the staff to do that article) and they had the nerve to rip Nirvana. Anywho, that’s right, I say anywho,Hinder sucks and if the drummer, or any other hack from this band would like to meet me, (there are several liquor stores in the Mustang area) please let me know so we can arrange a time and place.

  5. Phil says:

Isn’t Look At OKC an Oklahoman production? That makes it not-an-alternative weekly.

  6. lemmy says:

Wow! Must be really easy sitting behind a computer talking trash on other people. What have you accomplished with your lives? Please… show me your platinum records, your old passports that have been filed with overseas travels, the hundreds of thousands of fans who have personally meet the guys and actually know they are great people. No… instead you can just pretend to act like you know anything about the industry and try to come off as an internet tough guy.. in reality you are just a jealous hater that has nothing to show for yourself, and in reality, just pathetic. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but when you go out of your way to bring other people down, all it really does is make you look like the douche-faced hater you really are, that is what is really sad… at the end if the day, after reading your thoughts (like anyone important actually does that???) I’m sure those guys will be crying themselves all the way to the bank lol, get a life and do something productive with your self, hating just makes you sound like the little unimportant kid you are…

If you give me 2017 as the over/under on when patrick’s net worth exceeds Hinder’s, i’ll take the under. When you dont make good music, one crappy platinum record doesnt get you very far. Every business professional in okc considers patrick required morning reading. And there just isnt much money on the artist side of the music business unless you have a hit second album.

      • The Gamecock says:

I will never defend Hinder’s musical stylings. There’s nothing to defend. But how can you claim there isn’t money in the music industry yet claim there is a ton of money to be made in journalism? And for the record not every business professional in OKC considers this a MUST read. It’s a very entertaining site, but lets not go crazy. Hinder made more for one night at the internet casino than this website does in a year. Is it a sad statement? Yes. Is it true? Yes.

    • Joe Murray says:

Lemmy, I can tell you are a real genius. Go back and read your comment. You state “but when you go out of your way to bring other people down, all it really does is make you look like the douche-faced hater you really are, that is what is really sad.” It sounds like you have just described yourself in this quote. And uh, as for my “old passports that have been filled with overseas travels,” I do have one, courtesy of the United States Army. Kuwait, Desert Storm Vet, S.Korea etc. Unfortunaltley, my overseas travels consisted of serving our country and being a part of a team that PROTECTED thousands of people, not PLAYING to thousands of fans while getting s##t faced every night.

  7. Austin Garvey says:

I was going to say something witty to defend this band that is from our great home state of Oklahoma, but then I decided to save my breathe. I figure the 4, now 5, people that have seen this website probably wouldn’t make it this far down before hitting the back button. Good news though, ….I did. You’re welcome. Now go back to your mothers basement and turn on your Slayer cd and start a mosh pit with your stuffed animals.

    • Ymi17 says:

Ah. Such a pathetic little blog that the band members’ methhead family members swap quick texts and decide to come en masse (all two of you) to ‘defend’ the band. This is the ONLY press hinder has gotten in years, man.

  8. Joe Murray says:

You said “everyone is entitled to their own opinions.” Enough said. One more thing, read the Rolling Stone article, these hacks talk trash just as much.

  9. SofaKings says:

Hinder had great promotion and marketing companies behind them. Their music, however, was fitting for the time of a real musical “lull” in the industry. An industry which is flavor-of-the-month.
Are they great songwriters? That’s in the eye of the beholder.
I never saw them live until Katt-fest. They did put on a better “show” than my favorite band The Cult, but, at least The Cult has earned their place in music without the help of a marketing machine.
Even though Hinder is in the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, there are many other great bands from Oklahoma, some signed, some not.
All-American Rejects, Aranda, Flaming Lips, Stone Cold Sober, Violence to Vegas, (older bands) Ugly Stik, EZ Access, Passion, Forte, etc.

  10. lemmy says:

Sofaking, didn’t the cult rip off that song that theory of a dead man plays? Haha just kidding… katt fest was a fun festival. I thoroughly enjoyed all the acts, it was really nice to see lit too!

Ymi17 your right… this is Joe Rodden. Austin Garvey and myself have been tweeked out all night on this new hybrid meth that we got the formula from that breaking bad show. Can’t stop texting…. must continue… defending our family….to be honest I don’t even know how I stumbled upon this joke of a blog or even know who the Hell this joke of a writer is, I mean this guy can’t even get a simple job of getting names correct. If he can’t do that. I highly doubt anything else he says can be anything remotely acreditable… I wonder if his fan base even exceeds the double digits? Probably just him and his loser dungeon and dragons clan talking trash out of his parents basement.

And for you Joe… my entire family has been military for 3 generations… we are from the Virginia area but have bounced around so much we finally landed in this great state. My parents have been fortunate enough not to have been involved with any combat, but my grandparents and great uncle’s have all served in combat, so first off, thank you for your service! I personally respect bands that take the time out of their arena tour schedule to play small bases. Hinder has done that a lot! And continues to do so (they may not be playing arenas now, but they still play for our men and women in service) and further more. They actually care, they genuinely spend time meeting and getting to know everyone after the show. Asking us to stay in personal contact. It really gives you a positive feeling after leaving one of their shows.

Like I said earlier,.Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It is just beyond childish though to go out of your way to write and entire article though, solely dedicated to bringing someone else down. It’s too easy to do that, and can honestly be done towards anyone. This is where us, as adults, should recognize that. And strive to be better. Why not write positive articles? Honey attracts better than crop. Who knows, you might even grow your non existent fan base that way?

  11. Hobo Joe says:

I’m not from Oklahoma. Who is Hinder?

    • The Smith says:

^ this…and why are they not called “The Hinder With the Word ‘The’ Blacked Out With a Sharpie on Their Appearance Posters”?

It’s also weird that I’ve patronized three out of the four liquor stores that they’ll be visiting.

  12. Steve says:

Is Art Art Are We Art Page 5
Is Art Art Are We Art Page 5
Is Art Art Are We Art Page 5

(This has been my artistic interpretation of three apparently separate articles in Look@OKC. It’s art. Or is it?)

  13. Ringo says:

I wish them all the luck. Music business is tough & even tougher for rock bands. I mostly listen to rap & have been involved in that end of the business and entertainment. One of the toughest things for rock bands is competing with the popularity with classic rock. Lots of one hit wonders today. Hinder deserves credit for their success even if it’s peaked. All the luck to those guys!
