Raza Mayor: Mayor Holt Proclaims “Hispanic Heritage Month” in OKC

Last week, small-r mayor David Holt put his moderately-priced smartphone camera down for a few minutes to sign a proclamation that designates September 15th through October 15th as Hispanic Heritage Month, mainly to give thanks and designate praise to the many Spaniard-centric citizens for their hard work and selfless sacrifice, primarily in the brutal conquest of most Latin American countries.

While the next thirty days should technically be called Latino (or Latinx, if you’re nasty) Heritage Month, this celebration of our spicy sangre was first recognized in America by President Johnson in 1968 and, like a stealthy puma, has silently moved under your noses until recent years, when mi gente moved out of the shadows to party, karambo, fiesta, forever, with Holt’s pen officially signing in the holiday. Better late than never, huh?

From KFOR:

According to the proclamation, “Oklahoma City is home to people whose ancestry represents hundreds of nations, including Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.”

The proclamation says “it is appropriate to increase Hispanic cultural awareness and diversity by recognizing the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and to celebrate their heritage and culture.”

I sure do hope Holt remembers that proclamation the next time an ICE enforcement van is patrolling the Southside. But, you know, I’m willing to give our classically goofy-looking mayor some credit: publicly, at least, he seems to be going against many of the state’s conservative leaders—which, really, is most of them—and their absolute dislike of Latino peoples.

Holt seems to generally like Mexicans and other Latinos—just as much as he seems to like every other race, religion and creed that he photogenically panders to—so much so you have wonder why is he still calling himself a Republican? This summer, he even tweeted that Oklahoma City is welcoming to all immigrants, contrary to the national mating-call of “Send ‘em back!”

Having worked not only in the Oklahoma legislature but also as the Majority Whip for the Senate Republican Caucus, as well as serving Inhofe, Fallin and as Chief of Staff for Mayor Mick—all in all a pretty heady resume—I almost want to believe that Holt is really a left-leaning insurgent, undercover deep inside the Republican party to jodar las cosas up a bit…and, for the most part, it seems to be working.

And while this proclamation is basically another notch in his fine leather belt of positive change for the city, I can already picture him safely celebrating with a selfie at one of Oklahoma City’s newest non-taco taco joints, dining on the crispy buffalo cauliflower tacos at the decidedly non-Mexican restaurant Mexican Radio. Give me a call Mayor; I’m buying!

So thank you, Mayor Holt, for making this sueño a realidad. That being said, what I really want to know is if there’s any chance you’d pay $1.5 million dollars to bring Los Tigres del Norte to OKC to open up a park that is primarily located on the Southside?

  1. All those alert and awake do have suspicion of a far left insurgency going on here. According to Wikipedia he even was serving near the president during the post 9/11 patriot act which stripped more rights from Americans in one act than WW1 and WWII combined. Its time we look closer to a larger agenda to for the far lefts control of a capital city in the strategic location of the middle of America
    From wikipedia
“Holt served as an aide to Dennis Hastert when Hastert was U.S. Speaker of the House, and during the time of the September 11, 2001 attacks.[11] He served in the White House Office of Legislative Affairs under President George W. Bush.[12]”

    1. I hope this mayor doesn’t forget about black heritage month was in February every year and see what he has to say then thank you.

    2. You honestly think that the left was controlling GW Bush and created the “Patriot Act”? You also think that the left removes rights?

      1. That’s typical crazy right wing bull shit. However, Little Davey’s former mentor IS a convicted child molester.

  2. I always identified as Hispanic. I know there’s a difference in meaning, but I always heard it’s mostly regional preference.

  3. Los Tigres del Norte would make a hell of a lot more sense than the Kinks of Leon………in fact, any yet to be named Mariachi Band (or bands) would make more sense than the Kinks of Leon!

  4. Man, we have got to get that liberal idiot out of office.

  5. You forgot to mention Holt’s first political job was an aide to then Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert. Perhaps you remember Hastert, the highest ranking elected official to serve a prison sentence. He was convicted of repeated incidents of child molestation and financial crimes.

Holt is a career politician, much like Mary Fallin, was in the Oklahoma State Senate 2010-2018, (ran unopposed his second term) and moved on to being Mayor. I’m sure he would love to move back to Washington where like the Mayor’s gig there are no term limits.

He is no left-leaning insurgent, just a politician seeking a permanent gig. He is more of a younger Mick Cornet, but much smarter, but like Mick doesn’t express any controversial viewpoints, as he hopes to stay in office somewhere until retirement.

  6. If you’ve got nothing better to do, read his book Big League City. How we got the Thunder. There are some interesting factoids, one of which is about mayor mick camping out in David Stern’s office to make his pitch. Of course, mick is the hero in this story written by his former staffer but that doesn’t diminish the job they did.

  7. I’m fine with whatever any group wants to call themselves, but to disparage “Hispanic” because it refers to Spain, and prefer “Latino/a” strikes me as a little odd, given that that term refers to Rome and the language that spread across its empire. Spain spread its Latin based language across most of the Western Hemisphere. The labels seem totally intertwined.

    1. They usually go hand in hand, but technically speaking, Hispanic refers to Spain or a Spanish-speaking country, whereas Latino refers to a Latin American country. So you can be Hispanic without being Latino, or Latino without being Hispanic.

So Brazilians are Latino, but not Hispanic since they speak mostly Portuguese. Spaniards could technically be Hispanic, but are not Latino.

      1. Oh, well, if you’re going to cheat and bring Brazil into it, I just don’t know what to say. I figured they didn’t really call themselves either Hispanic or Latino, but, really, everybody knows they’re not really thinking about such things, dancing the samba all day and eating their favela flavored ice cream while they torch their their forests.
But I think Italians ought to be considered honorary Latinos, for goodness sake. Back in the day, people used to talk about their Latin blood, before South and Central America hogged the term,….

  8. I do not have a problem with Hispanic heritage month but I do have a problem when they take out of the schools black history month. This is the month that African-American students should learn about their heritage even more but the sad thing is that there is not enough African-American teachers to teach on this subject. So Mayor, you need to make sure that Black History Month is taught in the schools in February as well as making sure the state of Oklahoma observe this month. There are many African Americans hat have contributed to this country and our children should know about them.
