Hobby Lobby to give employees more money to spend on out-of-pocket birth control expenses

We finally have some good news from Hobby Lobby to report!

Earlier this week the conservative arts, crafts and stolen biblical artifacts dealer announced they were raising the company’s minimum wage from $15 to $17 dollars per hour.

Via The Tulsa World:

Hobby Lobby officials on Tuesday announced the Oklahoma City-based crafts and home decor retailer will be raising its minimum wage to $17 effective Oct. 1.

The full-time minimum hourly wage was set at $15 in 2014, according to a news release noting Hobby Lobby has raised the pay rate 10 times since 2009.

“We have always worked hard to be a retail leader when it comes to taking care of our people,” founder and CEO David Green said in a statement. “Because this year has presented so many challenges to our employees, we are very happy that we are able to provide pay increases to thousands of our associates before the Christmas season.”

As you may know, we’ve been critical of Hobby Lobby for the way they treat their employees, handle a pandemic, and portray themselves as a Godly company all while exploiting low-income workers in places like China, but this is a nice move. The Green family’s net worth is approximately three times higher than the entire GDP of Oklahoma, so they can afford to give their employees a little raise.

It’s also great for Hobby Lobby employees! For a full-time employee, that basically equates to a pay raise of $4,160 a year. Just think of all the drugs, porn, sex, and morning-after-pills that will afford them! Now they’ll really be able to live, laugh and love.

  1. at $17 per hour, the folks stocking shelves and sweeping the floors are making a similar salary to new teachers.
more of a sad commentary on teacher pay than anything else.

I’d rather stock shelves than put up with public school…and parents.

    1. This is one of the rare occasions on which you and I agree.

    2. You are an idiot, but great job being right once.

      1. And there it is…

  2. “… the full-time minimum hourly wage…”

Sometimes the top line tells a lot less than the whole story. Call me cynical, but…

For a more complete picture, I’d like to know what HL’s minimum and average hourly wage is for part-time workers, and what percentage of employee hours is staffed by part-time workers. (Part-time workers need not worry about cutbacks to their employee benefits, like medical insurance. It’s unlikely that they ever had any.)

The Tulsa World article mentions that Target and Walmart have recently raised their minimum wages, and that Amazon is recruiting at $15 per hour. Just saying.

    1. And does this apply to all employees (janitorial, warehouse, clerical office staff, etc.) or just front-of-the house retail staff?

    2. I’d just like to know if Hobby Lobby refers to employee compensation as Greenbacks.

    3. Part time employees make 11 .00 an hour effective October 1st. The raises at the other places are for full time as well. Hobby Lobby employees were making that 4 years ago

    4. Being a part time job employee it’s 10.50 an hour and you only get 3 or less days a week with the “promise” of possible full time after 60 days. My average is 2 days.

  3. In the realm of Amazon doing good things for the community- Hobby Lobby has had to raise its pay for employees working in its warehouses. Why? Because a bunch of them are leaving to work at the nearby Amazon Fulfillment center (which itself will soon grow and need more employees). They left for better pay, better benefits, and slightly better working conditions.

  4. I’m happy for their employees, but I just don’t think I could work for a company that sends out official company memo’s stating that they’re basing policy concerning employee health on a dream their wife had where God told her not to worry about a global pandemic. Again, glad they got the raise, and I wish them well.

  5. Wait. Shouldn’t the state legislators swoop in and demand Holy Hobby Lobby cut that rate by $12 to keep it from skewing the market?

  6. Make it $25.00 an hour minimum plus full health coverage then we’ll talk.

Do they make their employees attend chapel?

  7. Give ’em time. Whenever the Green’s have an “atta boy” moment an “aw shit” episode is soon to follow.

    1. Many years ago, I had a boss who said one aw shit wipes out 100 atta boys.

  8. In another shocking development, those that got the raise to $17/hr suddenly had their hours cut by 30%

  9. Didn’t the Greens just pocket a bunch of cash from the Cares Project for their Bible Museum that nobody cares about? Guess we know where the hourly bump came from. Thanks, taxpayers!

  10. Not one positive comment. You people are just sad.

$52,000 a year to work in a warehouse? Mark has lot his mind.

    1. Where are you getting $52,000/yr? My calculation is $32,640/yr. Did I miss something?

      1. Um.. $25.00 times 2080 working hours in a year. Curious to know where you got your number.

  11. Sarcoostic- your handle alone would have led me to believe you know sarcasm when you see it.
